Introducing
the Series. . .
 |
|
| The Series, Combat
Arms, consists of infantry within a line company observed during the conduct of
live-fire training. It is not a portrayal of any historical event or any famous person.
These works depict a few of the nameless infantry performing their respective duties. |
The illustrations
provide a glimpse into the critical tasks these individuals continuously train to execute
at a moment's notice. These occupations are thankless and unforgiving. Attention to detail
is critical, as oversights and mistakes are potentially deadly. |
| Establishing and
maintaining a state of combat readiness is an elusive goal. But for all who have
faithfully trained, both those in the midst of conflict and those poised and ready to go,
we give tribute with Combat Arms. |

This drawing depicts a squad "Base of Fire." This
firing position is delivering a high volume of accurate fire to fix and force the enemy to
duck for cover. These men maintain suppression to cover the advance of an assault unit. As
the assault unit nears the objective, the "base of fire" will cease, allowing
them to sweep through and destroy the target. The backbone of a fire team is the M249
Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) (right foreground). The team leader (second from right)
positions himself alongside the SAW and must dictate the rate of fire, ensure rounds stay
on target and that all weapons cease at the proper moment.

After spotting a target, a forward observer radios for a fire mission.
Having received the "call-for-fire," these mortarmen, up to 3500 meters away, do
not see the target. By plotting their location and that of the target, a direction of fire
is determined. An aiming stake placed in the ground to their front, in line with the
target, serves as their aiming point. After an initial firing, the observer relays the
degree of any error back to the mortarmen by radio. Using their "aiming stake"
as a reference point, the mortarmen apply elevation and deflection changes to the mortar's
sight, countering the error from the previous shot. By realigning their weapon in this
manner, they eventually adjust the rounds to impact the intended target.

In the din of a platoon
live-fire attack, this Sergeant "motivates" his squad to assault an enemy
position. As supporting fires from friendly, adjacent elements cease, he orders his
element to rush forward and assault. If his element fails to quickly close with and
destroy the position, they will be caught in the open and exposed to enemy counter fires.
